Introduction
Mission and Goals
The mission of the Society for Clinical and Translational Science (SCTS) is to advance research and education in clinical and translational science so as to improve human health.
The immediate goals of the Society are:
- To conduct an annual meeting in cooperation with the Association for Clinical Research Training (ACRT) that focuses on the needs of trainees and junior faculty; provides a forum and the CTSA consortium for dissemination of new developments in the design and conduct of clinical and translational research; provides a forum for leaders in governmental agencies, the private sector, and philanthropic organizations to provide updates on their programs related to clinical and translational research; and facilitates scientific collaborations and the development of a cultural identity for the discipline through opportunities for social networking.
- To articulate a unified voice on public policy and private and governmental funding related to clinical and translational science.
The missions of many different professional societies overlap the mission of the Society for Clinical and Translational Science and the Society recognizes and respects the contributions that these societies make to advancing the discipline of clinical and translational science. As a result, the Society for Clinical and Translational Science is eager to partner with these societies and join in common cause to advance the field.
Membership
Institutional membership is open to all U.S. academic institutions that support the Society's mission and are prepared to provide the support needed to finance the Society's activities. An institutional membership model has permitted the Society to rapidly accumulate the resources needed to initiate the Society's programs. Institutions that provide support will have the privilege of offering unlimited complimentary memberships to individuals at the institutions who are conducting, or supporting, clinical and translational research. Governance is vested in a Board of Directors derived from institutional members.
Individual memberships for individuals in the U.S. and other countries who are not in institutions that are members is open to clinical and translational investigators and supporters in academia, industry, philanthropy, and government. The annual meeting will be open to all who wish to attend, and the committees that craft the annual meeting will be broadly representative. Other societies with overlapping missions are encouraged to consider meeting in the same location and time as the Society.
