The Clinical Research Forum ("The Forum") is a growing public policy and advocacy group based in Washington, DC, that is dedicated to advancing the nation's clinical research agenda. The Forum is an organization comprised of 60 of the nation's most prestigious and acclaimed academic health centers and professional societies whose goal is to sustain and expand a cadre of talented, well-trained clinical investigators at all stages of career development, and support nurturing environments and comprehensive research capacities within academic institutions. The mission of The Forum is to provide leadership to the national clinical and translational research enterprise and promote understanding and support for clinical research and its impact on health and health care.
Recent medical research advances into the diagnosis, treatment and ultimate prevention of diseases have been accompanied by growing public expectations for both the translation of these research findings into the everyday management of disease, as well as a demand for some accountability that doubling our nation's investment in research is making a difference to the health of our nation. The Forum recognizes that this context sets the stage for a critical time in our nation's history, and is playing an important part in moving the clinical research enterprise forward in America.
Our standing in the research community speaks for itself: Forum members collectively account for more than 3/4 of the National Institute of Health's extramural research budget, and include 27 of the top 33 NIH university grantee institutions and 7 of the top 8 independent domestic hospitals grantees.
As a leading advocate for clinical translational research, Forum member institutions intimately understand the importance of working with the business community and with legislative bodies to bring research-based issues - and ultimately, results - to the fore. The Forum provides access to public/private partnerships to support clinical research, education, lobbying, an information technology roundtable, a pharmaceutical industry roundtable, collaborative patient advocacy, and other collective action.
The Forum works to advocate for increased support for clinical research and a heightened awareness of the essential role that academic health centers and professional societies have in alleviating human suffering and improving the quality of life for all people.
